2014 Zaino wins his first Grand Prix!

8th March 2012 Zaino wins his first PSG with 64.74% !
Now a completely different horse, he is so much more confident, and showing great potential for the Grand Prix work, our ongoing training with Sarah Millis has proved invaluable.
Zaino competed successfully in Sunshine Tour 2011 winning two trophies for 3rd Place in the Owners Team and Final. This was a big achievement for this 7 year old who prior to leaving for Sunshine Tour had only competed in 1 Advanced Medium at home. The tour helped his confidence and improved his changes, Spain is such a good training camp. We are now looking forward to establishing our tempi changes and moving onto PSG.

Zaino M was purchased from the Equine Elite Auction in November 2009 he has been a very difficult character to work out.  He had plenty of issues and was more than bold about telling me how he thought we should go around things including bucking, rearing, and napping!  On 27th Dec 2009 he dumped me in the school at home breaking ribs and rupturing my sacroiliac joint.  I still very much loved this horse and was determined to persevere with him he had me hooked !  I purchased a point 2 air jacket starting wearing a hat and got back on 2 months later.  Since then its been a ‘work in progress’ he is very much a Jeckyll and Hyde character.  We embarked on a journey competing in the 6 year old classes and he won many classes and qualified 6 year old International at Hickstead and was placed.  He also had me off at Hickstead in the warm up at another show but then went straight into the arena and won 71% elementary.  So you can see my problem !  I had back x ray for kissing spine which came back fine, back specialists, front feet x ray and new shoes put on, change of feed, change in hay, change in stables, change in training and so on and so on and then finally Sarah Millis my trainer suggested Gaynor Davenport horse whisperer.  She was amazing she told me about his history what he was feeling his character in fact that was not anything she did not tell me even with what I already knew and what had happened thus far.  Apparently Zaino was very open and keen to tell her his woes.  Armed with this information we made some more changes with some success, the turning point came when Liz Oakenfold suggested an Activo Rug as she felt that his muscles were quite hard and lactic acid could be causing him a problem.  Wow !  what a difference !  Zaino is now much calmer, easier and a lot happier.

I wanted to share this experience as things don’t always go the way we think or want them to but if you stick with it and don’t give up the solutions are out there!

  1. We have a 6 year old pony that has had more interuptiond to his young eventing careeer than one could ever imagine. Some small and some just plain baffling. The list is too long to mention. I am considering asking Gaynor to come and ‘talk’ to him. We are desperatley sad about the time lost and the fact we can never get to the bottom of his troubles. He’s supremely talented but we just can’t keep him on the road, one thing leads to anotehr and all rpogrees is halted and we start over again. I know bringing in a horse whisperer is not a very orthodox plan but we don’t know where to go with this lovely pony! I am slightly sceptical but prepared to try anything and see. Can you recommend her? Many thanks – Alex

    • I can definately recommend Gaynor everything she said about Zaino she could not have possibly known and when I was recommended her I laughed so I do understand your feelings. However, although she did not tell me anything I didn’t already know about him she confirmed alot of what I had already suspected had happened to him. She also confirmed what was the right course of action to take with him and he did really work. Zaino is still a complex character but we are really cracking it now and I am excited about our future together, it has taken 2 years to build this partnership also something worth bearing in mind the talented ones sometimes do take a little longer, Hope this helps. Jo

  2. Many thanks Jo. Well, since your reply – I have called Gaynor and she is happy to come quicky and we will se her the week after next – I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks for your words of encouragement.

  3. Hello there,

I’m very impressed with how far you already got with this horse, I rode him like 2 times and the 2nd time he started bucking and didn’t stop till I feld into a fence bruising a few ribs and my kidney haha. At that time he was about 3 years old, maybe 4. I do remember I loved just brushing him, he was the sweetest horse when just in the stable.

I do have got some pictures of him this one is from 02-01-2009

    Greetings from the Netherlands.

P.s. I’m sorry for my crappy english, it’s not my native language.

    • Hello thank you so much for the information and picture I am very interested in tracking down Zaino past history. He is a very sweet horse in the stable and has been a difficult character to crack. However I have now owned him for 2 years and we are a great team he is working towards Grand Prix. He was born in 2004 so the picture is from Jan 2009 I purchased him in October 2009. I understand he did go for stallion testing but did not finish do you know why ? Was he a stallion or a gelding when you were riding him ? Any information would be very much appreciated. Thank you for contacting me. Jo
